FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
Lumae Functional Health operates as a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance for visits. This allows for longer appointment times, more personalized care, and a root-cause approach that is often not supported within traditional insurance-based models.
This structure allows us to focus fully on patient care rather than insurance limitations, rushed visits, or symptom-based treatment.
Why don't you take insurance?
Functional medicine visits are typically much longer and more in-depth than conventional medical appointments. Insurance-based models often limit appointment length and may not cover advanced testing, comprehensive lifestyle counseling, or individualized root-cause care.
By remaining insurance-independent, we are able to:
- Spend more time with patients
- Provide highly personalized care
- Offer comprehensive evaluations
- Focus on prevention and long-term wellness
- Recommend testing and treatments based on clinical need rather than insurance restrictions
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
In many cases, yes. HSA and FSA cards can often be used for medical visits, lab testing, and supplements depending on your individual plan.
We can also provide detailed receipts or superbills upon request that can be submitted to insurance for reimbursement.
Can I use insurance for labs?
Labs are not run through insurance, as many labs and specialty labs are not covered by traditional insurance plans. In some cases, insurance companies may later determine certain labs are not “medically necessary,” which can leave patients with unexpected bills of over $1,000.
To help avoid surprise costs, Lumae Functional Health prioritizes transparent pricing and discusses testing costs upfront whenever possible. We provide estimates for recommended labs so patients can make informed decisions about their care before testing is ordered.
How much do labs cost?
Lab costs vary depending on the type and number of tests recommended. At Lumae Functional Health, all testing recommendations are personalized based on your symptoms, health history, and goals.
As a general estimate:
- Basic bloodwork may range from approximately $100–$400
- Comprehensive functional medicine testing may range from approximately $250–$700+ depending on the specialty lab and complexity of testing.
We believe in transparent pricing and discuss costs before ordering any labs whenever possible. Our goal is to help patients prioritize testing thoughtfully and avoid unexpected expenses. Testing is always optional, and recommendations are made collaboratively based on your individual needs and budget.
I was told my labs were 'normal'. Is this visit still helpful?
Yes! Many patients come to us after being told their labs are “normal” despite continuing to experience symptoms like fatigue, digestive issues, hormone imbalances, brain fog, or inflammation.
Functional medicine looks beyond standard reference ranges to evaluate patterns, lifestyle factors, nutrition, stress, gut health, hormones, and other underlying contributors that may impact how you feel. Our goal is to understand the bigger picture and identify potential root causes that may have been overlooked.
What should I expect at my first visit?
Your initial visit is a comprehensive evaluation focused on understanding your full health history, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. We review prior labs if any, discuss potential root causes, and create a personalized plan tailored to your needs.
Appointments are designed to be collaborative, educational, and supportive.
Do you prescribe medications?
Yes, when clinically appropriate. Functional medicine focuses on addressing underlying causes while using evidence-based treatments that may include lifestyle changes, supplements, and prescription medications, and bioidentical hormones when needed.
How long does it take to see results?
Healing timelines vary depending on the individual, health history, and underlying imbalances being addressed. Some patients notice improvements within weeks, while others may require a longer-term approach for sustainable healing.
Our focus is on creating lasting progress rather than temporary symptom relief.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes. Virtual visits are available depending on your location. Melissa is licensed in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
