Juice cleanses, liver “flushes,” 21-day resets — the wellness world loves a seasonal purge. Here’s what the science actually says about supporting your body’s built-in detox system.

Bottom line up front: Your body detoxifies continuously — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It doesn’t need a spring cleaning. But it does need the right raw materials to do the job well.

What your liver actually does (and needs)

Your liver performs over 500 functions. But when it comes to detoxification specifically, it runs a two-phase biochemical process that converts fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble compounds your kidneys and gut can eliminate. This happens constantly — not seasonally.

The blood sugar rollercoaster

Fruit-heavy juices deliver large doses of fructose without the fiber to slow absorption. This spikes insulin repeatedly throughout the day. Over a multi-day cleanse, this can dysregulate cortisol patterns and disrupt the hormonal signaling that governs hunger and satiety.
